Parent Counseling

Personalized Support for Parents of Neurodivergent Teens and Adults

You are a parent who wants nothing more than to see your child happy, independent, and thriving. You do everything you can to support them, but parenting an autistic or neurodivergent child can be incredibly complex and exhausting. You often question yourself and worry if you’re doing something wrong, leading to feelings of parental guilt.

At Neurodiversity Wellness Center
We Understand and Support You

As your child grows older, navigating high school and young adulthood brings new challenges. Social dynamics become more complex, and your child may struggle to form healthy relationships, feeling painfully lonely. When your child’s heart hurts, so does yours. You may feel powerless as it becomes less age-appropriate for you to intervene on their behalf. Increased responsibilities, more schoolwork, and future planning can overwhelm your emerging adult, and the fear of making mistakes can paralyze them. You do everything you can to support your child emotionally and practically.

You may lie awake at night worrying about your child’s future, prioritizing their needs until you’re drained. You want to support their independence but are unsure when to step in and when to step back. It’s natural for parents in your situation to feel uncertain about this. There is no parenting handbook made for you. But you are not alone in this journey. We are here to support you.

Individual Counseling for Parents: What to Expect

You’ll have regular sessions with your autism therapist, typically once a week for 50 minutes. During these sessions, you’ll build a trusting relationship, viewing your therapist as an understanding and supportive ally who values neurodiversity. Together, you’ll tackle important issues at a pace that feels right for you. You’ll learn and practice effective strategies for communicating with your child, fostering their independence, enhancing problem-solving skills, and boosting their confidence and motivation. You’ll also learn effective tools to support your own emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Our therapists integrate various approaches tailored just for you, including internal family systems therapy, positive parenting, person-centered therapy, mindfulness, narrative therapy, solution-focused approaches, motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and skills training. These methods help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your child’s unique perspective and experiences, and build skills to better navigate parenting and life.

Is Parent Counseling different from Parent Coaching?

Yes, counseling and coaching are different.

While both parent counseling and parent coaching can help caregivers develop specific skills and strategies to handle parenting challenges effectively, parent coaching does not delve into underlying emotional issues. Parent Counseling focuses on addressing emotional and psychological challenges that may interfere with parenting or emotional wellbeing. Developing coping strategies to manage stress, increasing self-understanding, and processing trauma are common elements of parent counseling. Another difference is that parent counseling is conducted by licensed professionals.
